Bicycle and pedestrian safety audit meeting.
8/24/2017

Overview

The Mays Landing Neighborhood plan which was unveiled in 2015 is designed to revitalize our downtown area. Specific portions of Goals 4&5 could be addressed by joining forces with Sustainable Jersey, Goal 4 of the NP calls to Promote Mays Landing’s Tourism & Recreational Opportunities. Goal 5 aims to promote a safe and convenient transportation system that is accessible to all users.
Pedestrian and bicycle safety are two Sustainable Jersey actions that can give us 15 points towards sustainable Certification. It starts with an audit worth five points, and then a plan worth 10 points. Once those two actions are complete there are funding opportunities to put that plan into action. ( DOT, Air Quality
Additional benefits of making these goals a reality are

Audit

The goals of a Bicycle and/or Pedestrian Audit are to address pedestrian and bicycling safety by identifying areas where safe, comfortable, accessible and welcoming environments for pedestrians and cyclists can be created or improved

  1. The audit requirements. must include a survey of existing infrastructure and the description of the opportunities and constraints in that area. Required components; Sidewalks • Curb ramps • Crosswalk inventories (location and ttype of crosswalk markings) • Off-road bicycle/pedestrian paths • Bike lanes (if available) • Shared lanes marked with signs or shared-use arrows (sharrows) • Bicycle parking • Pedestrian Traffic Signals • Crossing guards
  2. Best place to start. Support from cross county connections is free for limited focused audits. At 8/17/17 meeting it was decided to take action on the downtown neighborhood plan that has already been written.. Our town is very diverse. Audits are often conducted along roads near specific locations including schools, business districts, parks, public buildings (e.g. libraries, senior centers) and/or transit stops and stations. Audits can be for the pedestrian environment, the cycling environment or both. The focus of this audit will be
  1. Downtown.
  2. Extending the bike path
  3. Audit opportunities
